Espresso coffee is a complex beverage - so to facilitate its preparation, the coffee pod has been invented. The pod contains a dose of ground coffee sufficient to make one or two cups, in between two sheets of filter paper, compacted into a round shape and sealed in an inert atmosphere (nitrogen gas).

Round pod with edge: 55 mm
Double round pod: 70 mm

HARD POD
Compact, requires an appropriate infusion chamber.

SOFT POD
Not compact, suitable for different infusion chamber types (though not always suitable for making a perfect espresso).

ESE is a consortium of companies manufacturing coffee pods, espresso coffee machines and coffee roasters that has been created to promote a single technical standard for the pod.
